APAHA First Annual Slot Program Awards
2009 saw a new innovation, created by APAHA in conjunction with AHA make its debut at the U.S. National Horse Show. Through the efforts of an APAHA committee, comprised of Chair Peter Conway, Bob Hart, Jr., Russ Taylor, Mary Trowbridge, Frank Galovic, Lollie Ames, and Roger Johnson, a slot prize money program was implemented. Borrowed from the hugely successful Reichert Quarter Horse Celebration it was offered to people interested in competing for prize money in the English and Western Pleasure Junior Horse National Championship classes.
The concept revolves around the sale of fifteen slots at $3500 per slot, the ownership of which qualifies the shareholder for prize money available upon winning a Top Ten or better in the class. For its maiden voyage, it was decided to make the slot program available to the English and Western Junior Horse classes to give breeders a much-needed prize money incentive for breeding exceptional young horses. Ultimately, the purebred Western Pleasure was the only class to sell the total number of fifteen available slots for 2009 Nationals. Checks sent to purchase slots in the other classes were returned to the owners with the understanding that those people will have first right of refusal when the class is offered again the next year.
Once a slot is purchased by an individual, that person has lifetime rights to renew each subsequent year. If they do not have a horse they wish to compete within that division, then the slots may be “leased” to another individual for that year’s competition—however, the original owner is always responsible for the ultimate payment, and if a year’s payment is missed then the slot may be sold to another individual. While the initial cost of the first fifteen slots at $3500 will remain fixed as payment to the program, there is nothing that will prohibit an owner of a slot , once the program becomes more viable, from charging an additional “lease charge” above that $3500.
For the inaugural event in 2009, 100% of the money generated was earmarked for prize money, with APAHA committee members donating personal money for the promotion and management necessary to get the program up and running. Dale Chavez generously donated a signature Chavez Belt Buckle for the Champion winner, as well. $52,500 was generated through the sale of 15 slots for the Purebred Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. The Champion, JF Verrisk ridden by Tommy Garland and owned by Barbara Lynn Hunt, won $13,125. Reserve Champion went to Sunsational Kid, owned by Joe Frizzell, winning $7875. Four additional top ten winners were awarded $3937.50 each.
